When teams pay attention to three areas, they fire on all cylinders.
Alignment: We naturally align with a cause which has a positive meaning. Each team member engages with their head and heart in a way which creates momentum.
Simon Sinek talks about knowing your “why”. Why do you do what you do? Is it making a positive difference to the lives of others? Is it so important that you will fight tooth and nail to deliver?
Is your “why” powerful enough to drive positive engagement in the business?
Connection: How well are your people connected – to the wider business perspective, to the task, to each other and to themselves (their own values and motivations). Turf wars drain energy, distract the team from delivering and impact the open flow of communication.
Peter Senge (1990) says that when teams perform poorly, their collective output is well below the average intelligence of their team members. When we are disconnected from each other we may hold back information, be overly aggressive, have too much self-interest, be mis-trusting, play political games and listen poorly. And then performance suffers.
Trust: the foundation of relationships is trust – be that work, sport or family. We rely on trust as the base. In your team think about:
- How well do we keep to our commitments?
- Does the team have a set of valued principles?
- Is there an openness to the dialogue in the team?
- How clear is the intent of each team member?
- Are motivations generally serving the overall team? (or are personal agenda’s playing out too much?
